Choosing Between Fabric or Vinyl for Your Banner

Choosing Between Fabric or Vinyl for Your Banner

There are two main types of materials for display banners: fabric and vinyl. When choosing between the two types of materials, there is no clear cut answer as to which one is the better material, as each one has its advantages and disadvantages. The decision between vinyl and fabric has to do with individual preference based on cost, durability, image quality, and storage and transport.

Here at iTek, we’re a professional printing company that creates custom vinyl and fabric banners for companies all across North Carolina. Our experts are here to tell you when you should use vinyl and when you should use fabric for your banner material.

One of the first things that your company should take into account is the price that you’re willing to pay for your fabric sign or vinyl banner. Typically, vinyl banners are more cost-effective than fabric banners, thanks to the invention of digital-based graphics printing. This invention has allowed organizations to create graphics that can be made quickly and effectively, eliminating the need for hand-painted signs. Vinyl signs are available in a wide variety of sizes and weights, and cost will depend based on what size that you require.

Image Quality

The differences between fabric and vinyl materials cause banners created with these materials to differ in image quality. It’s important to understand that most vinyl signs are screen printed and most fabrics are printed using dye sublimation. The process of screen printing allows for graphics that are sharp, bold, and look great at a distance. However, looked at close-up, vinyl banners can appear to be blurry or bleed-y, despite the fact that they’re typically well-defined.

On the other hand, dye sublimation creates graphics that are softer but allow for a greater range in colors. This means that fabric banners have a richness in colors that vinyl banners lack. As a result, fabric banners tend to be better for professional applications.

Intended Usage

Because vinyl banners are waterproof, sometimes windproof, and heavier, they are great for outdoor applications. On the downside, soaked fabrics can lose much of their visibility as the materials darken and becomes translucent.

On the other hand, fabric banners offer a huge advantage in terms of how they can be stored and moved. Fabric folds up easily and is lightweight, meaning that fabric banners can be easily carried around from place to place. In contrast, vinyl materials are much heavier and can retain wrinkles, so it’s not the best option if you need to transport your banner on a regular basis.

Which Material to Choose
