In the past few years, the global textile printing industry has placed an increased emphasis on sustainability and environmental friendliness. One of the new green technologies that has sprouted up during this period has been digital textile printing. Traditionally, textile printing has been one of the most harmful things for the environment, with its numerous chemical and dyes, but the advent of digital textile printing has greatly lessened the harm.
Here at iTek, our Concord, NC printing shop recognizes the numerous benefits of digital textile printing as we have introduced this technology. Here are some of the environmental benefits of digital textile printing.
Waste Reduction and Prevention
One of the biggest issues of traditional textile printing was the huge amount of waste that it generated. Textile production is still the world’s biggest source of water pollution, largely due to the dyeing processes. However, digital textile printing largely eliminates the usage of inks and the inks that it does use are free of heavy metals, formaldehyde, and APE. This means that the inks used in this process reduce waste and are non-hazardous, non-toxic, and biodegradable. Also, since digital equipment does not require setups and uses electric charges to place ink, scrap is lowered when compared to traditional textile printing.
Digital Textile Printing is Waterless
One of the biggest environmental risk factors in regular textile printing is the excessive water production and waste. However, with digital textile printing, many of the printers are completely waterless. There are no water pre-treatments, steaming, or washing requiring when using a digital textile printing machine.
Fewer Toxic Chemicals
In traditional textile printing, it requires a lot of toxic chemicals to produce a printed piece. First, you need darkroom chemicals to produce plates in offset printing, which themselves are made from polyester or rubber. You also have to deal with all the solvents necessary to remove any ink from the rollers. Digital textile printers sometimes still use some chemicals to complete the process, but they use much less than traditional textile printers.
In the old days of printing, if you needed a textile press proof, this meant that the job had to be set up, the plates had to be made, paper had to be strung through the press, printed on, and then cut down to size. This all created a tremendous amount of waste, just for the purpose of creating a few trial copies of your label. Now with digital textile printing, you can send a printing company your proof and get an idea of what it will look like without any printing at all.
